What we do to Raise Funds

A number of different activities are organised to raise money for charity.   These include raffles, dances,  sponsored walks/ runs, children's disco and art evenings.

Art Event 2008
This year's event, the sixth in a series of annual art events organised in aid of charity by the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside, will be held on Sunday 11 May at the Marcliffe Hotel, North Deeside Road, Pitfodels, Aberdeen where proprietor Stuart Spence has generously donated the use of the Grand Ballroom for the evening.  The artist this year will be Alison ross Ewan who will present

"An Evening with Watercolours"

The painting process which will start at 7.00 pm will be captured live by CCTV and projected for all to see on a large screen as it progresses. At the end of the evening, the completed demonstration portrait will be auctioned, with the proceeds going to Friends of Anchor and other charities. For more details see the event flyer.

Slimathon
Our current fund raising event is a sponsored Slimathon.   Some 15 members of the club have signed up to lose weight over 8 weeks in aid of Riding for the Disabled.    Members participating weighed in on Ash Wednesday under the watchful eye of Angela Horsley.   Members can, if they want, weigh themselves each week to keep track of their progress.   On the 27 February,  Louise Martin,  daughter of member John Martin,  will be giving a motivational talk to Members on how they might improve or maintain their weight loss.

 Charity Ceilidh
The Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside organised a Ceilidh in support of Instant Neighbour at Kippie Lodge in November 2007: the band was Reel Din. Instant NeighbourThe event was well attended, including by about 30 staff and friends of Instant Neighbour, and raised £800 for the charity, a significant proportion of which was from the raffle.    The photo shows President Quentin Tweedie at a club meeting presenting a cheque for to Sophy Copland,  Chief Executive of Instant Neighbour who said "Instant Neighbour's Board and Staff wished to thank Deeside Rotary and everyone who attended the Ceilidh in November for their magnificent support in raising £800.  Without this kind of generosity,  Instant Neighbour simply would not be able to continue to help those in most need here in the North East".   Quentin replied that it was a pleasure to work with the Instant Neighbour team,  especially since they attended the ceilidh in significant numbers themselves,  addding greatly to the fun and atmosphere of the eveningas well as toits success in raising funds.

Charity Disco
This event  was  held in the run up to Halloween at Jumpin Jaks on Saturday 27 October.   The headline charities for this event will be Cash for kids and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Art Evening
The 2007 event, the fifth in a series of annual art events organised in aid of charity by the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside, was held on Sunday 10 June at the Marcliffe Hotel, North Deeside Road, Pitfodels, Aberdeen where proprietor Stuart Spence has generously donated the use of the Grand Ballroom for the evening.  The artist this year was Michael Kitchen who was

"Capturing Character in Portraits"

During the evening, Michael explained what fascinates him about people and he showed the audience how he sets about capturing an individual’s personality in a portrait. For the demonstration he worked in pastels to paint a portrait of a Berber shepherdess whom he first sketched last October when he was in the Atlas Mountains, North Africa.

The painting process was captured live by CCTV and projected for all to see on a large screen as it progressed. In addition to his commentary, Michael invited questions from the floor at appropriate junctures. At the end of the evening, the completed demonstration portrait was auctioned, with the full proceeds going to Mercy Ships.

Michael Kitchen’s own website at www.woodofshaws.co.uk gives more information on his work, his gallery and on the painting holidays and courses he offers.

As well as demonstrating portrait techniques on the night , there also on display was a portrait,  painted and donated by Michael Kitchen of the well known sporting celebrity, Sir Alex Ferguson.   The portrait was also sold in aid of charity.

Last year local artist Sandie Youngson painted two pictures before our very eyes and managed to provide some entertaining conversation at the same time.   The two picture were auctioned at the end of the evening together with another donated by artist Sandie.    With some £3,000 generated on the night Aberdeen Deeside Rotary decided to give £1600 to MacMillan Cancer Support and £1400 to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi.

Christmas Raffle
Each year the combined Rotary Clubs of Aberdeen raffle a car in aid of a nominated charity and also each club's own charity funds.

All 17 Rotary Clubs in Zone 3 played their part in selling a total of 45,575 £1.00 raffle tickets,
which surpassed the record of sales made in 2004. Ticket sales started at the Echt show in July, and continued at the Braemar Games, at The Aberdeen Motor Show, at The District Conference in Aviemore, at Thainstone Sunday Market and at several other club events until the car was installed in The Bon Accord Shopping Centre on November 20th where ticket sales took place all day and every day until the draw on Christmas Eve by John Reynolds, Lord Provost of Aberdeen.
The principal charity selected to benefit from the year raffle was UCAN  which is based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and whose aim is to spread knowledge about urological cancers in both males and females,
conduct research and found a specialist team to improve the treatment available to cancer sufferers.
After paying for the car and other expenses the Zone 3 clubs will be able to donate £1 7,000.00 to UCAN and leave a similar amount to be shared amongst the clubs to fund individual projects.
